When downloading 3D Gaussian Splatting models from web showcases built on PlayCanvas or SuperSplat, assets are commonly packaged as .sog containers.
If you need to incorporate these models into desktop 3D training pipelines (like Nerfstudio, GSplat, or Gaussian-MCMC) or render them inside DCC software like Blender, decompressing the SOG container back into a standard Stanford PLY point cloud is required.
Decompression Workflow
[PlayCanvas SOG Container]
├── 1. Unpack Morton-Order Spatial Octree
├── 2. Decode Embedded Texture Buffers (Positions, Colors, Quaternions)
├── 3. Reconstruct Uncompressed Single-Precision Floats
└── 4. Assemble Validated Binary PLY Header & Vertex Array
| Output Component | Format Standard | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Header | format binary_little_endian 1.0 | Compatible with all standard 3D Gaussian tools |
| Geometric Points | x, y, z (Float32) | Exact original spatial position |
| Color Channels | Spherical Harmonics $f_{dc}$ | Preserves native color and view reflectivity |
| Anisotropy | scale_0..2, rot_0..3 | Complete 3D covariance ellipsoid shape |
How to Convert SOG to PLY Online
- Drag and drop your
.sogfile into the FreeConvert3D workspace. - Select PLY format.
- Click Convert & Download .PLY to extract the full uncompressed point cloud.
