The Polygon File Format (Stanford PLY) is the gold standard data format for storing 3D scanner data, LiDAR point clouds, and raw photogrammetry output. Designed by Greg Turk and Marc Levoy at Stanford University, PLY accommodates both raw unorganized point clouds ($X, Y, Z$ with optional RGB color channels) and polygonal mesh topologies.
Whether you captured a dental scan, scanned a physical automotive component with a Revopoint / Creality scanner, or processed drone photogrammetry in RealityCapture, our online PLY viewer lets you inspect geometry immediately in your browser.
Technical Architecture of Stanford PLY Data
[PLY File Structure]
├── Header (ASCII) ──► Format Type (ASCII or Binary Big/Little Endian)
│ ├── element vertex ──► Total Vertex Count & Properties (x, y, z, red, green, blue)
│ ├── element face ──► Total Polygon Faces (vertex_indices list)
│ └── end_header ──► Delimiter Marking Start of Data Block
└── Binary / ASCII Data ──► High-Density Coordinate Buffers & Color Channels
| Scanner Output Check | Optimal Range | Potential Defect |
|---|---|---|
| Point Density | 100k to 2M Vertices | Excessive point density causes viewport lag; decimation recommended for 3D printing |
| Vertex Colors | 8-bit RGB [0-255] | Uncalibrated exposure leads to blown-out highlights or dark shadow noise |
| Outlier Artifacts | Clean Object Silhouette | Stray floating points (scanner noise) must be cleaned before mesh reconstruction |
| Mesh Watertightness | Manifold Shell | Raw scans are open non-manifold surfaces; bottom base capping needed before slicing |
How to View and Inspect PLY Files in FreeConvert3D
- Upload PLY: Drag and drop your
.plyfile directly into the viewport. FreeConvert3D’s client-side parser reads binary little-endian and ASCII PLY formats natively. - Analyze Mesh Density:
- Check the Triangles and Vertices readouts in the bottom HUD.
- Inspect the overall bounding box dimensions in physical millimeters.
- Inspect Surface Quality:
- Toggle Wireframe Mode to check polygon distribution and scan resolution.
- Switch to Gold or Titanium surface materials to inspect organic surface curvature and scan noise.
